Day 85 – Ningaloo Reef Bay Loop snorkel at Turquoise Bay

Monday morning and we were all go go go to try organise a replacement hire car whilst the Renault was out of action as Exmouth was wearing a bit thin for us. The mechanic called and said he’d discovered that our ABS disc had been chewed up when the bearing had worn out so we’d need an entire new disc rotor set to get that little part as it wasn’t available separately. Oh well – new disc rotors on both the rear wheels for us then! It was being overnighted from Perth so we had at least another day, so hire car was a top priority. NRMA organised something for us to pick up (we didn’t know what, but we knew we had it for 3 days which was good) which turned out to be a little Suzuki 4WD 3 door thing which was adorable. Noisy and clunky and so lightweight that I felt like it was going to tip over around corners but it was a set of wheels and we were now able to get up to Cape Range National Park up the road to do some snorkelling!

It was pretty windy when we got up there but we made for Turquoise Bay anyway and swam out to the slightly more sheltered Bay Loop section on the eastern side. It was choppy above the water but the current wasn’t very strong so we covered a fair amount of ground.

The coral was huge and the fish were beautiful, and we even came across a green turtle swimming around looking for food. We followed him for a while and then came back in to shore to get warm and have a nap. When we woke up we chatted to some folks from Perth and one from Italy who gave us some great advice about what to do in-between here and Perth.

It was getting colder and windier so we jumped in the baby 4WD to head back to Exmouth, stopping in at a big sand dune where the wind was roaring over the top of the dune as the sun was setting behind it. We walked around for a while but eventually retreated as our ankles couldn’t handle much more sand being whipped past them in the strong wind of the afternoon!

We made it back just in time to watch the sunset from the lighthouse on the top of the cape, and then drove back to town and relaxed in the cabin at the caravan park for the evening.
